Diversifying and Expanding Model Lineup
2020 is proving to be a great year for Tesla and CEO Elon Musk. The share price has soared and catapulted Tesla to the world's 2nd most valuable automaker, only behind Toyota. What is billionaire entrepreneur CEO Elon Musk doing to sustain this? He's creating buzz and excitement with new models like the Tesla Roadster, expanding his model offerings to include pickup trucks and smaller, less expensive SUVs, and looking to bring on more affordable electric cars to widen his global customer base.
Tesla Roadster
Musk calls his Tesla Roadster the "fastest car in the world". It's expected to roll-out in 2020 or 2021. It's a 4 seater sports car that can go from 0 to 97 mph in 1.9 seconds, which is quicker than quick. The top speed is 250 mph, the battery range is reported to be a huge 620 miles. Engineer Musk has been working on the much anticipated Roadster for a number of years and it's getting closer to take-off.
Model Y
Currently Musk is ramping up assembly of the Model Y SUV which is due for distribution this spring. The Y is Tesla's first crossover, all-wheel drive SUV and it's thought to be its hottest vehicle ever. It can go 350 miles on a charge. The Y is larger and less expensive than Tesla's very popular Model 3. Musk plans on expanding production of the Y from California and into China and Germany. He is also increasing production of the Model 3 sedan, which on average sells for $50,000. The Y price range starts at $40,000
Cybertruck
Musk is also focused on taking his favorite project, the Cybertruck, to market. The pickup is a futuristic looking, stainless steel designed electric truck. Since it was introduced late in 2019, more than 200,000 Cybertrucks have been ordered. The starting price is $39,900. The EV has a range of 250 miles on a charge, goes 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. It's targeted for delivery to customers in 2021.
Global Competition on Price-Points
The future of driving is electric and a key differentiator is price. Global automakers like GM, Toyota, VW and Ford, among others, are involved in a technological arms race to offer new, competitively priced EVs for the masses.
