Climate Change's Wrath

Image
Nasty Weather Globally Source:  Napa Valley, CA AP  From California to Alaska, Greenland and China There is growing evidence that Climate Change and Global Warming are worsening.  In California, hundreds of wildfires are burning out of control.  They are being spawned by blistering heat and record numbers of lightning strikes.  There were 11,000 lighting strikes in a few days, torching trees, brush and triggering the massive wildfires.  500,000 acres have been burned, communities are threatened, buildings have been destroyed and tens of thousands are evacuating.  The Bay Area has the worst air quality in the world on Wednesday.  California Governor Gavin Newsom commented:  "If you are in denial about Climate Change, come to California." China's Torrential Rains Meanwhile, in China torrential rains and massive flooding have caused the evacuation of a million people and caused billions of dollars in damage.  China's huge Three Gorges Dam i...

CLIMATE CHANGE WARNING FROM SIBERIA

Image
Northern Russia's Intense Heatwave & Wildfires Source:  Siberian Forest Fires in June 2020 via satellite image Clear Impact of Climate Change Two Years in a Row I n June 2020, towns in northern Russia are experiencing sweltering heat normally found in the Tropics.  In Siberia, it's so hot wildfires are breaking out, pine trees are bursting into flames and peat bogs are stone dry.  In some locations, temperatures have hit 100 degrees (F).  Climate scientists are calling the Siberian heat wave a "warning cry" about Climate Change from the Arctic.  Experts at the World Meteorological Organization are troubled by satellite images showing that much of Russia's Arctic is in an extreme heat zone. Blazing Heat The extreme heat is fanning forest fires and igniting normally water saturated peat bogs.  Climate scientists fear that the intense heat and fires in Siberia are signs of even hotter and drier conditions to come with more frequent forest fires....

Russia's Permafrost Dramatically Thawing

Image
Permafrost is Thawing & No Longer Permanent:  Climate Change Source:  Siberian Times Global Wake-Up Call Scientists are pointing out that the effects of global Climate Change are particularly evident in Russia, where 2/3rds of the land is permafrost.  But that is dramatically changing.  Global warming is savagely reducing the permafrost in Siberia, which is one of the coldest human habitats on Earth.  The permafrost is thawing away. Twice the Warming Siberia and the Arctic are warming at least twice as fast as the rest of the world.  Melting permafrost is causing severe flooding during springtime in Siberia.  It's changing and disrupting the landscape and in some cases destroying homes.  The permafrost melt is changing the habits of migratory animals and is threatening entire villages. Raging, Massive Wild Fires In the last several weeks, 8 million acres of forest in Siberia have been engulfed in massive fires.  T...

UN Warning: Greenland's Melting Ice Sheet Threatened

Image
Europe's Record Smashing Heat Threatens Greenland Ice Sheet Source:  NASA - Greenland Ice Sheet World's Second Largest Ice Sheet Melting Europe has been sweltering under a heat wave that has smashed temperature records.  The heat wave is now travelling toward Greenland.  The United Nations is warning that the world's second largest ice sheet is in the cross-hairs of extremely hot air and threatened. Smashing Ice The UN is warning that the hot air headed to Greenland is "absolutely incredible".  It's been moving up from North Africa this summer to Europe.  Temperatures in parts of Europe have hit record highs and surpassed them by 2, 3, 4 degrees Celsius, which is incredible.  That mass of hot air is now travelling northward to Greenland. Global Climate System The US is warning of high temperatures in Greenland and increased melting of the ice sheet.  They think it could result in record low ice levels, at or below levels se...

Preventing Antarctic Ice Shelf Meltdown

Dumping Trillions of Tons of Artificial Snow on the South Pole Ice Shelf Source:  West Antarctic Ice Shelf New Scientific Study & Novel Recommendations International scientists have just released a study with an approach they believe could prevent a disastrous meltdown of the West Antarctic Ice Shelf at the South Pole.  The approach is novel. They want to dump 8 trillion tons of artificial snow on the ice shelf over the course of ten year. 12,000 Wind Turbines The scientists would use 12,000 wind turbines to pump seawater up to the surface where it would be frozen into snow.  Their theory is that the artificial snow would weigh down the ice shelf enough to stop it from collapsing.  According to the co-author of the report Anders Levermann of Germany's Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, "we are at the point of no return if we don't do anything."  The study was just published in the journal Science Advances. Coastal Cities in Danger ...

Carbon Hungry Plants

Fighting Global Warming With Plants Source:  Cornfield stock image $35 Million Project at the Salk Institute The Salk Institute in San Diego is on an "audacious" mission to greatly reduce global warming.  They're engineering genetically altered plants to store, at much higher levels, carbon dioxide from the air. The goal is to create plants that fight and reduce global warming.  Their groundbreaking research program is being funded by a $35 million grant from the TED Audacious Project. Food Crops Plants already store carbon dioxide from the air.  The Salk scientists' goal is to increase the storage particularly in the roots to keep it underground.  They believe that food crops can be engineered to store more carbon dioxide.  They're starting with large crops like corn. Once they perfect the re-engineered plants, their goal is widespread, global farming use.  They forecast that this innovative solution could remove 25% of the made-made carbo...

Cloud Power Cutting Climate Change

Solar Geoengineering 1991 Mount Pinatubo Volcanic Eruption Artificially Brightened Clouds at Sea Designed to Reduce Global Temperatures After major volcanic eruptions the Earth cools.  For example, millions of tons of volcanic ash from the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in 1991 in the Philippines formed a huge global haze.  The haze was discovered to be a protective sunscreen, bouncing sun rays back to space and lowering world temperatures by .6C. Today, global researchers wonder if producing artificial clouds could work in a similar way and reduce world temperatures. Clouds Clouds naturally reflect the sun's rays.  At the UN, a solar geoengineering committee has been formed to consider the possibilities of utilizing artificially brightened clouds with enhanced power to reflect back sun rays.  Research teams at Harvard University and top think tanks around the world are working on approaches.  One idea of note comes from University of Edinburgh Professor Em...

Solar Geoengineering to Cut Warming

Adding Calcium Carbonate to the Skies to Fight Global Warming Source:  1991 US Govt. Photo of Mt. Pinatubo Erupting Harvard University Research Harvard researchers have a unique& innovative remedy to stall Global Warming.  Add calcium carbonate to the atmosphere. Calcium carbonate is used in antacids. They believe it could cool the planet and help to slow Climate Change.  The concept is based on the impact of volcanic eruptions on the atmosphere. Modeled on Volcanos Erupting The idea is to block sunlight or deflect it from the earth's surface.  It's based on what happens from volcanic eruptions.  The volcanos spew sulfur particles into the atmosphere and the particles cause sudden, though temporary, changes to the global climate.  An example cited by the Harvard researchers is the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines.  That event caused temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere to drop 0.6 degrees Celsius. In-Atmosphere Test...
