The Earth Bio Genome Project                                                  Source:  Stock Images More Than 5,000 Scientists and 1.8 Million Species Scientists from around the world are rushing to protect nearly 2 million species on the planet Earth. They are documenting the genetic makeup of 1.8 million animals, plants, fungi and more, as the United Nations warns that 1 million plants and animals are at risk of extinction within upcoming decades.  The global scientific collaboration is called the Earth Bio Genome Project.  More than 5,000 global scientists are involved.  By the end of this decade, they hope to have digitized the DNA footprints of 1.88 million living species.  It is an incredibly arduous task.  By the end of 2022, they hope to have sequenced just 3,000 species' genomes.   Why ...

The Moon & Human Behavior

Inner-connectivity of the Moon & Humans                                  Source:  Stock image of Wolf Moon New Scientific Evidence of Ancient Superstitions About the Moon Ancient civilizations believed that the phases of the Moon triggered certain events.  They also believed that certain things happened only during specific phases of the Moon, like the full Moon.  New scientific research is providing credible evidence to support some of these superstitions about the interconnections between humanity and the Moon. Sleep Patterns A new study just published in the journal Science Advances demonstrates the impact of the phases of the Moon on sleep patterns.  100 volunteers from Argentina's indigenous communities and 450 volunteers from Seattle, Washington wore sleep trackers for two months to track their sleep patterns during the phases of the Moon.  The res...

Defying Gravity - "Reverse Buoyancy"

Image
Boats Floating Upside Down on Levitating Liquid Source:  ESPCI Experiment Concept French Experiment with Big Potential Applications Scientists at ESPCI in Paris have performed an amazing experiment that seems to defy the laws of gravity and physics.  They've demonstrated tiny model boats floating upside down underneath a levitating layer of liquid.  It's called reverse buoyancy.  The layer of liquid floated on a suspended cushion of air.  Because of the intense air pressure created by shaking the liquid and the air, the boats were able to float upside down.  These amazing research results came when the scientists were investigating the effects of vertical shaking, which can be used to suspend a layer of liquid in mid-air. Why Is This Important? Reverse buoyancy could have major practical applications.  Potentially, it could separate pollutants from water and also be used to transport materials through fluids.  The gravity defying action is from c...

Ancient Underwater Forest Discovered

Image
60,000 Year Old Forest Off Alabama Coast Source:  Northeastern University Scientists Say: Potential for New Medicines Off the coast of Alabama in Mobil Bay,  scientists have discovered a 60,000 year old forest of cypress trees.  The forest  is  now 60 feet underwater.  It once grew along the banks of a river. The team of scientists from Northeastern University in Boston and the University of Utah believe the trees may help forward the creation of new medicines.   Diving Back 60,000 Years The trees were buried under water, sediment and eventually the seabed for 60,000 years.  Powerful storms, including hurricanes that hit Alabama, blew open the seabed and exposed the forest.  NOAA funded the scientists diving expedition to document  the underwater forest and bring back samples of the wood. Surprising Findings Back in the lab, the scientists found 300 different types of organisms buried in the wood....

Killing the Flu with Viruses

Image
Novel Flu Prevention Method Source:  Artist Rendering of the Bacteriophages German Scientific Discovery Scientists in Germany have invented a novel means of defeating the flu.  They've created non-infectious virus shells that the flu virus latches onto.  This essentially traps the flu virus and prevents it from causing infection. Highly Effective The virus shells, created by the scientists, are called bacteriophages or simply phages.  They act as a trap for the flu virus by mimicking lung cells, which is the normal target of the flu virus.  The shells encapsulate the flu virus, thereby rendering it ineffective.  Mathematical models show the non-infectious phages to work effectively against a number of flu strains, including the deadly Avian flu virus.  Tests in animal models and cell cultures showed the phages neutralizing the flu in human lung tissue, preventing the flu from taking hold and spreading infection. Next Steps This is...

Is a Covid Cure on the Way?

Image
Chinese Scientists Developing Promising Treatment Source:  Stock image of coronavirus "Extremely Effective" Antibodies Discovered to Fight the Disease A team of Chinese scientists at Tsinghau University in Beijing have isolated several antibodies that are "extremely effective" at blocking the coronavirus from entering cells.  They believe they may be on the right track for treating and even preventing the disease.  Globally, more than 850,000 have been infected by COVID-19 and 42,000 have died.  To date, there is no known, effective and proven treatment for the disease which originated in Wuhan, China Next Steps to Mass Production The team analyzed blood from patients who recovered from the coronavirus.  They pinpointed 206  antibodies with a strong  ability to bind with the virus' protein. Of that group 4 antibodies blocked the virus from entering cells and two are exceedingly effective at doing that.  The Chinese scientists are now w...

Stardust Discovery, Oldest on Earth

Image
Stardust 5 to 7 Billion Years Old Found in a Meteorite in Australia Source:  NASA Meteorite  Stardust Material That's Older than the Sun This is an extraordinary scientific discovery just announced by a team of astronomers led by University of Chicago Professor Dr. Philipp Heck. In a meteorite that fell from space in Australia 50 years ago, there is awesome stardust dating back 5 to 7 billion years.  This stardust predates the Sun. Heck and his team analyzed the contents of the meteorite.  They found it to be the oldest, solid material ever found on Earth.  Their work has just been published in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. What This Discovery Opens Innovative Views On The scientists say this stardust will tell us how parent stars were formed in our galaxy. It will tell us about the origins of the oxygen that we breathe and provide the opportunity to trace materials back before the creation of the Sun. The stardust ...

New Color Changing Material from UK Scientists

Image
"Artificial Chameleon Skin" Source:  University of Cambridge Big Advance in Nanotechnology to Mimic Nature From scientists at the University of Cambridge in the UK a new innovative material that changes color when exposed to heat or light. The team calls it "artificial chameleon skin" and says it has wide application from active camouflage to large-scale dynamic displays.  The skin is powered by nanomachines.  The scientists say their work represents a big advance in using nanoscale technology to do biomimicry or mimic nature. Dramatic Color Changes The scientific inspiration came from color changing animals like chameleons and in particular their color changing skin cells, chromatophores.  The team essentially created artificial chromatophores by using tiny particles of gold, coating it with a polymer shell and then squeezing it into tiny drops of water in oil.  When exposed to heat or light, the nanoparticles stick together and dramaticall...
