Fireflies Inspire Brighter LED Bulbs

Lights Inspired by Nature Source:  Firefly Stock Image Lightning Bug Based Design This is new research from Penn State University.  They've developed LED bulbs that are brighter and use less energy.  The bulb surface mimics the structure of the firefly's lantern with its asymmetrical microstructures. Much Greater Brightness and Efficiency The Penn State LED design results in a light extraction efficiency to 90%.  Standard LEDs are symmetrical with an efficiency rate of 50%.  The scientists say the improvement is due to greater surface area and randomized reflection that prevents light from becoming trapped.  It's another case of nature inspiring innovation.
