  • There are many benefits from owning a dog, but this one is truly profound.  Scientists from New York's Mount Sinai University and Sweden's Uppsala University have found that owning a dog cuts your risk of dying young by 24%.  They have found that owning a dog is "protective against dying of any cause".  Here are some key facts:
  • Their research is massive, involving 70 years' worth of research study data on 4 million people in the US, UK, Canada, Scandanavia, Australia & New Zealand
  • Dog ownership cut the risk of dying young by 24%
  • It's even more compelling for people who've had a heart attack or stroke
  • It cuts their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by 31%
  • The biggest beneficiaries of dog ownership are those who live alone, according to the research
  • The benefits of having a dog, like my Brewster, are many, including:
1.  Companionship and fun
2.  Daily walking exercise
3.  Lower blood pressure and cholesterol
4.  Reduced anxiety and depression
  • A number of cardiologists believe so strongly in dog ownership, they actually prescribe dog ownership for some patients
  • Of course they don't know 2-year-old Brewster who chases rabbits, squirrels, tries to swallow bumble bees and once chased me down a country road until I saw him in the rear-view mirror and stopped to get him...not exactly anxiety reducing.

  • Penn State University scientists have found that a common, green veggie is particularly good for your health.  Here's what we know:
  • The green veggie is broccoli.  Here are some benefits:
  • Maintains a healthy gut
  • Lessens inflammation
  • Helps immune system
  • Could lower risk of depression & anxiety as an unhealthy gut can lead to mood problems
  • Reduces risk of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • In addition to broccoli, strong evidence suggests cabbage and Brussel Sprouts are thought to be good for your health
  • Sounds like we can ride cruciferous veggies to better health.
