Are We Alone in the Universe?

Humans have bee searching the skies and wondering if we are alone in the Universe since the dawn of time. Here are three sightings going as far back as the 1st century AD from Plutarch, Thomas Jefferson and Christopher Columbus Plutarch

Ancient philosopher and biographer Plutarch (A.D.49 -119) chronicled an incident during the battle between Lucullus and Mithradatis:

Plutarch wrote,  “when he faced (Lucullus) the enemies, he was amazed by the number of people and wanted to avoid and delay the battle. As Marios who was dispatched from Iberia  by Sertorius to help Mithridatis as a sergeant together with a military army challenged him (Lucullus), he got set for battle. While marching towards the conflict, without any observable change happening, the air opened and appeared a rapidly descending object resembling a flame, which appeared like a vase in shape and like a glowing annealed metal in colour. Both armies, frightened by the sighting withdrew. They said that this happened in Phrygia, near to what is known as Otries.”

 

Thomas Jefferson

In 1800 soon before he was 3rd President of the US Thomas Jefferson wrote about a UFO sighting in Louisiana by William Dunbar to The American Philosophical Society: 

It was apparently “the size of a house,” Jefferson wrote,  and the “color of the sun near the horizon. Immediately after it disappeared in the north east, a violent rushing noise was heard, as if the phenomenon was bearing down the forest before it, and in a few seconds a tremendous crash was heard similar to that of the largest piece of ordnance causing a very sensible earthquake.”

 

Christopher Columbus

Italian explorer and colonizer Christopher Columbus and members of his crew on October 11, 1492 saw a strange light which ascended and descended on his trip to America. It was logged in the ship’s diary. Columbus wrote:

It was like "a small wax candle that rose and lifted up, which to a few (crew members) seemed to be an indication of land."  His son Ferdinand also described it as akin to a candle that went up and down.
