Germany's Hydrogen Trains

In Germany and Ireland, new public transportation initiatives are getting greener with the use of hydrogen power.  Ireland is deploying three of the world's 1st hydrogen, double decker buses.  The hydrogen fuel cell, electric double decker buses will be used for commuter services in the Greater Dublin area, connecting Dublin to Ratoath, County Meath.  The buses are manufactured by Wrightbus in Galgoam, Northern Ireland. They can carry 79 passengers each.  For Ireland, this is the start of a zero emissions, hydrogen bus fleet and a world first in green, hydrogen double decker buses, built in Ireland.

Siemens Mobility Hydrogen Trains

Meanwhile, the German state of Bavaria is starting test runs of a hydrogen powered train, developed by Siemens Mobility. The two car train runs on non-electrified tracks and is designed to help with the process of decarbonizing Germany's transportation system.  The new green energy vehicle has a range of 497 miles.

Unveiling in 2022

Siemens will unveil its hydrogen train in 2022.  If the current testing proves to be successful, passenger service will officially start in January 2024.  Two hydrogen fuel cells on the train's roof are the key ingredients of the train's hydrogen traction drive.  To support the hydrogen train initiative and growth, Siemens is building a huge, CO2 free, 8.8 MW hydrogen production plant in Bavaria.  Meanwhile, Siemens has recently won a $3.4 billion contract from Amtrak to design and build 73 multi-powered new trains for the US.
