Driving With Zero Carbon Emissions

Honda intends to launch a hydrogen powered version of its most popular car, the CR-V SUV, in the US and Japan in 2024.  Here are the key facts:

  • Honda will start production in Ohio in 2024 on a hydrogen fuel cell (FCEV) version of its CR-V for launch in the US and Japan in 2024
  • The hydrogen CR-V will have a hydrogen fuel cell plug-in option with a charging port on top of the powertrain that allows the owner to top-off the lithium-ion battery at home to extend the range
  • Honda is committed to the belief that zero carbon emissions hydrogen will prove to be a powerful fuel source for the automotive, construction and other global industries
  • The Japanese automaker is targeting hydrogen fuel cells for passenger vehicles, commercial trucks and heavy duty machinery
  • Honda, in partnership with GM, has developed a new architecture for hydrogen vehicles, including the CR-V, that doubles the durability of that in Honda's hydrogen Clarity and also cuts the cost of production by 1/3rd
  • The main advantages of the FCEV over battery-electric are it can be quickly refueled like a gas fill-up, and it gets much longer range
  • The main disadvantage of hydrogen is the lack of hydrogen fill-up stations, particularly in the US, which Honda is looking to address.
