Space Cybersecurity at Risk
Satellites are Vulnerable to Hacking
New Report from The Royal Institute of International Affairs
UK based Chatham House or The Royal Institute of International Affairs has just released a report warning that there is an urgent need to address the cybersecurity of satellites in space. They are asking NATO and NATO member nations to address the cybersecurity of space-based satellite control system because they are vulnerable to cyberattack, particularly if a network system were breached.
International Security
There are important ramifications from this cyber vulnerability finding because virtually all military operations rely on space-based data and communications for instant decision making. According to the research report, any threat to a satellite's control system or available bandwidth "poses a direct challenge to national critical assets" and international security.
Critical Space Assets
With the military dependent on space based architecture, Chatham House researchers say there are new and growing cyber threats that can put military missions in jeopardy. The group is calling for a major investment to harden and protect satellites from hacking so that they can provide reliable and accurate information particularly for the military.
