"The Flying Man" Creates a Flying Car, JetRacer
VTOL With Speed & Maneuverability
French inventor, entrepreneur and flying enthusiast Franky Zapata has created an unconventional flying car called JetRacer for the public to fly and enjoy. JetRacer is being called the world's first flying car that you can actually test fly. Zapata is a world champion jet skier and a serial entrepreneur and adventurer. He is known in France as "The Flying Man". He is famous for successfully flying over the English Channel in his homemade jetpack/hoverboard called Flyboard in 2019. Now he and his company Zapata have invented a VTOL, or vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, that is powered by 10 micro-turbo-jet engines. He says that JetRacer can keep on flying even if it loses 2 engines.
What We Know About Jet Racer
It's a single seat aircraft that can carry up to 440 pounds. In essence, it is part plane and part chair. It can reach an altitude of 9,842 feet and hit speeds up to 155 mph. Zapata says it is able to withstand strong, turbulent winds. He adds it gets very good speeds, is highly maneuverable but is relatively short on range. The company has not yet specified the range of the VTOL. It has a light, modular chassis and can serve individual, civil and military functions. JetRacer is autonomous and can be remotely controlled. It also provides steering assistance when needed. According to the company, all critical systems are architected for a high level of safety and redundancy, including propulsion, control and the power supply.
Coming to the United States
In a very unusual move, Zapata is bringing JetRacer to the United States for a flight-testing campaign. Those who sign up on the Zapata website will be entered into a pool of potential flight testers. 25 civilians will be chosen to take the ride of their lives in Zapata's flying machine, JetRacer, making it the world's first VTOL flying car that the public can take for a test flight.
