Autonomous Robotic Navigation Inside the Body
Robotic Catheter Noninvasively Repairs Leaking Heart Valves
Boston Children's Hospital bioengineers have invented an autonomous robot that is able to autonomously navigate inside the body. That is a medical robotic first. It's a robotic catheter and offers a non-invasive way to repair leaking heart valves.
Artificial Intelligence Enabled
The device has an optical sensor powered by AI and image processing algorithms that guide the device through the heart. The robot uses a "wall following" navigational technique to determine where it is and where it needs to go.
Breakthrough Medical Innovation
Once it arrives at the leaking valve, the surgeon takes over to remotely operate a tool on the device and repair the leak. This breakthrough in robotic medicine worked a number of times on animal models. This is the world's first demonstration of a robot that can autonomously navigate in the body. It may usher in a world of new possibilities in the practice of medicine.
