iX Flow
BMW unveiled a new electric concept car, the iX Flow with unique, exterior, color changing technology. With this new innovation, for the first time, you would have the option of changing the exterior color of the car and even adding designs whenever you want. It works through a unique, car body wrap that contains E ink with color pigments and responds to electrical signal stimulation. To change the exterior color, all the owner needs to do is press a button and the color change is almost instantaneous. BMW says digital experiences aren't just for displays inside the car. This new E ink technology bring the "car's exterior body to life". The wrap, through electrical stimulation, delivers the new color and desired designs. In essence, it is a next-G car customization for the owner.
Breakthrough New Technology With Multiple Capabilities
BMW says this new E ink's electrophoretic technology offers many new possibilities for the owner. It allows them to personalize the exterior of the car and give it a brand, new look as often as they want. The company says it also enables greater energy efficiency. White exteriors keep the car cooler in the summer. Black exteriors pull in heat from the sun and keep the vehicle warmer in the winter. Also, BMW says it can make the exterior wrap flash to, for instance, help the owner find the car in a big parking lot. And they can use the color technology to inform the owner of an issue such as a low battery charge.
Rainbow of Colors
The new E ink system on the iX Flow is a concept. At the moment, the color changes enabled are white, black and gray. But experts say that BMW can add a wide variety of colors to the system. BMW has not confirmed that it is putting the system into production. But given the appeal of being able to change the color of your car and freshen up the look, the E-ink system has all the makings of a great and profitable idea.
