Readies For Takeoff for Commuters
Thanks to Joby Aviation, we may soon be hailing flying air taxis to get around cities. The California-based startup's full-size prototype S4 has successfully completed what the company claims is the fastest flight of an eVTOL to date. It hit speeds of 205 mph. The previous record was 200 mph. It is believed the eVTOL was piloted by remote control and is operating as a drone. Joby has also established a new range record of 154.6 miles on a single charge during a 77-minute flight. As a result of these test flights, Joby holds the current records for speed and flight length globally for eVTOLs.
Highly Advanced Aviation Innovation
The Joby S4 is a highly advanced piece of aviation technology. It is powered by six, electric rotors. The six rotors all tilt forward in a vectored thrust configuration for high-speed horizontal flight. It is a zero emissions, very quiet, eVTOL that takes off and lands vertically. It has been under development for ten years.
Operational Deployment
When the Joby air taxi goes into service, the company says it will be capable of carrying a pilot and 4 passengers. It is designed to transport people in crowded cities and also provide connections for people in underserved rural areas. The next target for Joby is to reach an altitude for the S4 of 10,000 feet.
Next Steps
Clearly, Joby Aviation is reaching new heights for the flying taxi industry. It has a big investor in Toyota which has poured in $720,000,000 for development and also is helping Joby design a 450,000 sq. foot factory to build the aircraft. The S4 has completed more than 1,000 test flights. Joby expects to secure FAA certification soon. And, it expects to have a network of its flying taxis operational by 2024.
