New Tech Guarding Ancient History
This is a fascinating case of highly advanced robotic, AI, drone and laser technologies being deployed to guard and protect ancient, historical ruins dating back more than 2,000 years. Famous robot dog Spot, created by US based Boston Robotics and now owned by Hyundai, is deployed by Italy's Archeological Park of Pompei to roam around the ruins to inspect and monitor the condition of the famous archeological structures.
Robotic Patrols for Data Collection
Spot is a quadruped robot with great dexterity and AI intelligence. He is able to travel on different and difficult types of terrain as well as to maneuver and squeeze in and out of difficult locations. At Pompei, Spot is monitoring and gathering data on the ruins for comparative studies and possible intervention to protect and preserve the fragile structures. One of the very beneficial functions Spot is currently performing is monitoring the state of restoration and recovery work to help ensure the safety of the site itself and the safety of the workers.
Integrated SMART Tech Arsenal to Preserve Pompei
The Park is using an array of new technologies as part of the SMART POMPEI project, including Spot, as part of an integrated, "intelligent, sustainable and inclusive management of the Park". Along with Spot's robotic skills and AI, they are using a flying laser sensor drone to autonomously take 3D scans of the ruins. This technological net of protection is a first of its kind at such a large archeological treasure. Spot will also be used to detect and search underground tunnels dug under Pompei by so called "tomb raiders" to steal precious art and valuables. The tunnels are too dangerous for humans to search but Spot can do the job. Spot has been one of the world's most versatile and successful robots with duties ranging from work on construction sites, on oil rigs and in cities for COVID social distancing.
