Marine Agriculture
This innovative concept comes from the UK.  It's called Floating Deep Farms which consists of large, vertical containers loaded with plants and submerged in water off of coastal areas.  It's the brainchild of engineers and researchers at Nottingham University.  They believe in this time of rising sea levels, Floating Deep Farms would increase food production as the ocean encroaches on land.

Food Crisis
Globally, new means of food production are desperately needed. Food production levels need to increase 70% by 2050 to meet global demand.  This new sustainable agri-tech concept is notable for its creativity and engineering.

Hydroponics and Aeroponics
The containers would support a variety of crops year-round, either through hydroponics or aeroponics. Specialized LEDs deliver the right amount of light.  The LEDs or solar panels also produce fresh water from sea water for the plants.  The containers are sealed at the bottom and have a dome top which eliminate climate & seasonal issues and isolate plant disease and pests.

New Kind of Farming
Experts say this concept promises much higher levels of productivity than traditional farming methods.  It offers year round production protected from the whims of mother nature.  Also, tidal and wave energy could be used to power the farms.  Of note, 18 of the world's megacities with populations over 350 million sit on coastal areas and are well situated for this new kind of farming.
