Rivian: World's 1st Electric Pickup
US Startup Beats Tesla, GM, Ford and more
Source: Rivian
EV startup Rivian is the first automaker to produce, launch and market an electric pickup truck. The US electric truck maker beat out the world's #1 electric vehicle maker Tesla, along with GM, Ford and others. The company's first R1T pickup truck for a customer drove off the assembly line at the Rivian plant in Normal, Illinois. More are rolling off the production line and the company says they are saleable to customers. In fact, they are "ready for sale in all 50 states". The R1T has a range of 317 miles on a charge and prices start at $67,500. As you can see in the photos, the e-pickup is so tough it can climb hills of sand and wade through water as high as the top of the tires. With a deposit of $1,000, the truck can be reserved for purchase.
Fully Certified
The R1T comes with a tailgate you can control with an App. It has a built in cooler under the bed of the truck and it has an air compressor. It has the distinction among electric pick up trucks of being fully certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the EPA and the California Air Resource Board. The EV has quad electric motors that pump out 750 hp, all wheel drive, top speeds of 125 mph, a payload capacity of 1,760 pounds, a towing capacity of 11,000 pounds, a 135 kWh battery and it can accelerate from 0 to 6 mph in 3 seconds. Deliveries will start in earnest in January 2022.
Hot EV Company
Rivian is a very hot company. Ford has invested $500 million in it. Amazon has not only invested in Rivian but it has also ordered 100,000 customized electric delivery vans. Rivian has raised more money before going public than any other EV company. And it recently filed a registration form to go public with an IPO. The market valuation for Rivian is $80 billion, which will enable it to expand and accelerate production.
Next Electric Pickups Coming Soon
The global electric pickup truck market is expected to be a huge piece of automotive business. Rivian has beat its competitors out of the box but they are nipping at its heels. GM is expected to be next with its electric Hummer pickup truck ready for purchase and deliveries in fall 2021. GM will be followed by Lordstown Motors and Ford with its F-150 due for release in spring 2022. Finally, the world's biggest EV maker Tesla will release its long anticipated Cybertruck in late 2022.
