THE FARTHEST LOOKS YET INTO SPACE

New Images from the James Webb Space Telescope

Peering Into the Universe More Than 13 Billion Years Ago

The world's most advanced space telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, has started providing pictures from the depths of space and time.  The images are simply breathtaking and historic.  They provide humanity the first opportunity to look back more than 13 billion years ago and ponder the origins of the Universe and the origins of all of us.  Webb is designed for infrared astronomy and is a marvel of technology and innovation.

Pictures That Travel Way Back in Time

Today, NASA released a picture of Stephan's Quintet, a group of 5 galaxies that are 290 million light-years away (Image #1).  The image has 150 million pixels and is composed of 1,000 separate image files.  It shows the galaxy in the center crashing through the group.  The second set of 2 images documents the death of a star in unprecedented detail.  It's the SouthernRing Nebula. Image #3 shows the galaxy cluster SMAC 0723, traveling through space more than 13 billion years ago.  President Biden unveiled it yesterday.

Some Details on the Telescope Technology

The $10 billion Webb is more powerful and more capable of seeing further into space and time than any other telescope technology to date.  The pictures it is transmitting from its position 1 million miles above the Earth are the deepest and highest resolution images ever taken of the Universe.  It uses a Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) to spot faint light from the most distant stars and pierces through dust and gas to see stars being born.  It has a spectrograph to breakdown light into its wavelengths, a coronagraph to block starlight and look at fainter objects near stars and a highly advanced camera.

Webb's Many Missions

The missions for Webb are unprecedented, exciting and awesome.  It will help scientists determine if there is life on other planets, help to solve how the universe and our solar system developed and how galaxies were created.  The initial images from Webb are fascinating the world.  For more news stories like this, Bargain Space Trips
