Part Sedan - Part SUV

Toyota is resurrecting its longest running model name with the unveiling of its new hybrid flagship sedan, the 2023 Toyota Crown.  The hybrid-electric vehicle will replace the Toyota Avalon in the Japanese automaker's lineup.  The Crown has quite the pedigree, dating back to 1955.  It became the first Japanese car sold in the US in 1958.  For 15 generations, the Crown was Toyota's premiere sedan.  The new Crown is much taller than a sedan with a high-riding SUV-like body.  Automotive experts are hailing the design as bold and blurring the lines between a SUV and a sedan.  It's a one-of-a-kind small SUV/sedan in the global automotive market.

Tech Specs

The Crown will actually be a series of vehicles crossing vehicle classes.  It will be available with a choice of two different powertrains and 3 grades:  Crown XLE, Limited and Platinum.  The Platinum comes with the brand-new Hybrid Max System, which is a performance-driven drivetrain with 340-plus hp from a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine paired with two electric motors.  There's an electric motor in the front and a more powerful one in the rear. It has direct shift, 6-speed automatic transmission.  It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. The vehicle gets 28 miles-per-gallon for city/highway driving.

More Tech Specs

The Crown XLE and Limited grades have the THS IV System, which is a highly efficient hybrid system that can achieve 38 miles-per-gallon in city/highway driving.  All Crowns come with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of driver assistance assets.  They also have Toyota's new Audio Multimedia System with a 12.3" touchscreen, in-car LED mood lighting, dual zone climate control and more.  This new Toyota is getting a substantive number of positive reviews as being bold and different with its striking and sculptured design.  It appears to be an important part of the future of driving.  For more news stories like this, New Travel Vehicles Illustrated
