Source: Stock
- Climate Change is now threatening our beers and ales. Here's what we know:
- The hop plant used in beer production for imparting bitterness, favor and stability to beer is susceptible to hotter, drier conditions and production has plummeted
- Researchers at the University of Kent in England are isolating hop genes in the hope of producing climate-resistant varieties
- What's at stake is the Great British Pint dying off and the great culture that goes with it
- Also at stake in the interim are the unique flavors the hops give the beers
- The University of Kent is also searching for hop genes that add special flavor to beers
- Some health benefits of hops:
- Essential oils, flavanols and anti-inflammations
- Sedative properties
- Help with insomnia and hot flashes
- For someone who enjoys ordering a pint in England and a port in Portugal (also being compromised by CC)... it's time to end this.
