  • Lung cancer is the world's deadliest form of cancer & the leading cause of cancer death
  • Now a pill taken once a day after lung cancer surgery cuts the risk of dying from the disease by 51%
  • The "thrilling", "unprecedented" and truly dramatic results come from a 10-year global study led by Yale University
  • The drug, orimertinib, taken after surgery cut the risk of dying in half
  • Lead author of the study, Yale's Dr. Roy Herbst said that 30 years ago nothing could be done for lung cancer patients but now we have this potent drug that should be "the standard of care"
  • Some patients in the US, UK and elsewhere now have access to the drug, which gives a new world of hope to those with lung cancer
  • All patients in the trials had a mutation of the EGFR gene, which is more common in women & affects more than 25% of lung cancer patients.

JOE BIDEN PINS CC HOPES ON HYDROGEN

  • President Joe Biden wants to produce 50 million metric tons or 2 million metric tons a year of clean hydrogen by 2050, which would cut 10% of US greenhouse gas emissions
  • Hydrogen has many advantages as a fuel for vehicles: zero carbon emissions, much longer range and very fast fill-ups, in fact similar to gasoline
  • But current technologies like solar and wind will have to be supplemented with new innovative technologies to meet the need for hydrogen fuel for aircraft, cars, homes, industry & more
  • To achieve the hydrogen goal, Biden will announce locations for several hydrogen hubs around the country, which will serve as pilot projects for a "reimagined hydrogen economy" that will fundamentally "change the way we build things in America"
  • Stanford University hydrogen expert Dr. Mark Jacobson says we will need much more hydrogen production - 14 million metric tons a year to reach decarbonization goals for steel, heavy duty transportation & agriculture
  • Biden Administration believes that developing hydrogen as a fuel source is a tremendous opportunity that could create 100,000 new jobs by the end of this decade.
