LOWER YOUR PAIN INTENSITY WITH MUSIC THAT MOVES YOU?
Source: McGill University
- Canadian researchers find that music that elicits goosebumps or intense feelings and reactions in an individual can lower their pain. Here's what we know:
- McGill University scientists say our favorite tunes can have a painkilling effect
- Beloved music approximates the pain reduction at 1-point on a 10-point scale
- That's about the same amount of pain relief as most over-the-counter pain medications deliver
- Moving music that is particularly impactful on the individual has an even stronger effect than 1-point in 10-points
- The study was done on 63 participants using a probe to heat an area of the arm
- While listening to various music tracks, participants rated pain
- Results: music eliciting more chills and of great meaning and impact to the individual produced lower pain intensity
- Next time you're in pain, you may want to pass by the pharmacy and hit the CD shop.
