Cyberhack Risk, Insulin Pump Recall
New Cyberwar Threat: Medical Devices - Medtronics' MiniMed 508 Insulin Pump Recall
Rare Medical Device Hacking Recall
Medtronics is recalling its MiniMed 508 insulin pumps because they have cybersecurity problems that can't be fixed right now. The company is doing this very rare medical device recall, because of cybersecurity issues, in conjunction with the FDA that also issued a warning. For millions of people with Type 1 Diabetes, their insulin pump is a matter of life and death to provide their body insulin.
Wireless Connections
The pump connects wirelessly to other equipment including a glucose meter and monitoring system that control the pump and the delivery of insulin. The concern is that a hacker could change the pump settings and harm the patient. About 4000 patients have the MiniMed 508 and the company is offering them an alternative with enhanced security.
