VW, Ford Close to Partnership
Teaming Up to Develop Electric & Autonomous Cars
Big New Technology Combination
VW and Ford are close to partnering on the development of electric and self-driving vehicles. That according to VW CEO Herbert Diess. The two companies have been in discussions for months. Diess told 500 of the company's top managers, gathered for a meeting at the company's headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany that the talks are going very well and are just about complete.
Counterweight
CEO Diess called VW a "de facto Chinese focused" company. Last month, VW announced it would produce more than 22 million electric vehicles in the next ten years with half built in China. Diess views the partnership with Ford as strategically important to gain more counterweight in the US. Carmakers are finding the shift to electric powered and autonomous vehicles costly. They are looking to add scale to spread out the cost. The combination of VW with the US' second biggest carmaker would be a powerhouse.
