NEW RESEARCH:  ELEPHANTS GREET THEIR FRIENDS WITH MORE ENTHUSIASM THAN HUMANS DO THEIRS

  • A University of Vienna research team studied nearly 100 elephants greeting their friends.  Here's what we know:
  • While humans greet each other with a "hello", handshake, sometimes a hug, elephants combine vocalization and gestures.  Here are some examples:
  1. Roaring
  2. Tail wagging
  3. Trunk swinging
  4. Approaching backwards
  5. Ear flapping
  6. 71% of the elephants were so excited to see old friends they spontaneously urinated and defecated
  • One wonders what depth of feelings and sensitivity these magnificent creatures have
  • To my old friends:  no need to roar, flap your ears or approach backwards when you see me...I still appreciate you.  The least said about the 71% 's final gesture the better.

  • An art installation in both New York City and Dublin called The Portal allows viewers in both locations to see each other.  It's a world first that harkens back to the legendary mysteries of portals as magical entrances to new worlds.  Here are a few facts:
  • The Portal just went live and was designed by artist Benediktas Gylys
  • He's built 2 art installations that each contain a portal and live stream video 24/7 from NYC's Flatiron South Public Plaza and North Earl St., Dublin
  • Allows people in each city to see each other 24/7 real time at a distance of over 3000 away
  • Gylys says it's an invitation for humans to reconnect
  • Will be up and running for next six months
  • One example of use: a University of Dublin student seeing and connecting with her Mom back home in NYC
  • This world-first, live art harkens back to mysterious, legendary portals imagined as entrances to new worlds for centuries.
