US research team has developed a new, innovative way to destroy cancer at the molecular level, that looks like a breakthrough. Here are some key facts:
Using vibrating molecules, the scientists destroyed 99% of cancer cells in the lab
The molecules are aminocyanine molecules caused to vibrate in sync by near-infrared light
They destroyed 99% of the cancer cell membranes which simply broke apart
These results are considered very significant and a marked improvement over other types of cancer killing molecular machines
The approach is called the molecular jackhammer
Scientific team is from Rice University, University of Texas and Texas A&M
Big potential: because of the near-infrared light, the molecular jackhammer can go deep into the body and without surgery tackle bone and organ cancers
